Bikeoff...Designing Out Crime Case Study
www.designcouncil.org.uk/en/Case-Studies/All-Case-Studies/Bikeoff/
Design can be used not only to reduce the risk of products being stolen, it can also be a way of encouraging more people to use a product if they think it is secure. This case study shows how the design process has made bike stands more secure because it involved watching how people used bike stands, how criminals abused bike stands and how secure locking practices could be made easier.

IDSA Undergraduate Scholarship
Want Some Free Money for School?
Again this year, IDSA will award two $2,500 Undergraduate Scholarships and one $1,500 Gianninoto Graduate Scholarship to eligible design students. Could one of those recipients be you or one of your students?
Undergraduate Scholarships will be awarded to two full-time industrial design students in their next-to-final year (third-year in a four-year program or fourth-year in a five-year program) who have earned a "B" or better cumulative average since entering the program. Applicants must also be a member of a current IDSA Student Chapter and be a US citizen or US resident. Scholarship applications are due June 1, 2008; application guidelines and forms can be found at http://www.idsa.org/absolutenm/ templates/?a=120&z=49.
IDSA's Gianninoto Graduate Scholarship was originally established by a contribution from famed package designer Francesco Gianninoto, FIDSA, a founder of the Package Design Council and creator of iconic designs such as "Elsie Daisy" the Borden Cow and the mid-1950s Marlboro cigarette package.
The Gianninoto Graduate Scholarship will be awarded to a senior industrial design student currently applying to graduate school, a student currently enrolled in a graduate industrial design program or a practicing professional applying to return to graduate school. Scholarship applications are due June 1, 2008; application guidelines and forms can be found at http://www.idsa.org/absolutenm/ templates/?a=3260&z=131.
For more information on either scholarship, please contact Larry Hoffer at 703.707.6000 x119 or larryh@idsa.org.
